Slush Mint Cake indoor sticky buds harvest with 20% rosin yields

Lil Dab is an experienced grower and rosin extractor who posts his grows on the Autoflower Network. In this grow he grew a beautiful, colourful and potent Dutch Passion Slush Mint Cake indoors alongside Lemon Z and Ice Cream Haze. This review focuses on the new Slush Mint Cake feminised seed variety.

Lil Dab grew a single Slush Mint Cake feminised seed in 14 litre/3 gal coco fibre container fed using a hydroponic dripper system and a 720W HLG Tomahawk LED.

Here is the original diary. Note that this grow took place before the official seed release, meaning that Slush Mint Cake was known only by the abbreviation ‘SLIC’ (Slurmint x Ice Cream Cake)

Grow info: Slush Mint Cake pre-release indoor grow

Feminised seed varieties grown Slush Mint Cake (‘SLIC’), Lemon Z, Ice Cream Haze
Grow medium Coco fibre 14 litre containers / 3 gal
Grow method Drip fed hydroponics
Veg growth 44 days
Bloom period 62 days
Final dry yield 220g / 7.8 oz
Rosin yield from the dry buds 20% (!)

Although the growth was straightforward and the harvest was an impressive 220g (7.8 oz), this grow was all about the exceptional quality of the extra-frosty buds. The frost covering was spectacularly thick and heavy. This contributed to the impressive rosin yield of 20%.

Rosin is the cannabis concentrate that can be produced using a simple Rosin Press, easily available online – no solvents required! Rosin can be made simply by squeezing a bud (sandwiched in some grease-proof paper) between hot hair straighteners. The rosin is squeezed out of the bud and can be scraped-up from the grease-proof paper.

Lil Dab is also an experienced cannabis concentrate producer and was excited by the 20% rosin yields. High extraction yields are only possible from the more resinous, highest THC strains.

Slush Mint Cake vegetative growth

Slush Mint Cake is an indica dominant hybrid made by crossing the acclaimed US strains Slurmint and Ice Cream Cake. The parent genetics are known for the stable offspring produced as well as the high-quality harvests.

Here are some comments and pictures from Lil Dab as Slush Mint Cake cruised through the cannabis veg phase.

Antonio also sent me a couple strains to try out from a while ago. I know the one strain is Ice Cream Haze and waiting to find out in the other for now it’s just SLIC. I’ll start one of each of those and will have a nice long veg until the big tent frees up with current photoperiods. Been slow on updates but not much happening. I plan on transplanting to 3-gallon containers this week and hopefully getting them into the big tent in the next two weeks.

SLIC day 30. She’s ready for transplant and getting thirstier than I can handle by hand. Need to get them on a Rez but I’m short on pumps at the moment. Girls are looking happier after transplant and I’m staying on top of feeding them.

Above, Slush Mint Cake looking green and healthy after 37 days of indoor veg growth with multiple growth points.

At this point, the Slush Mint Cake was looking very healthy in a 14-litre (3 gal) container of coco with 5-6 weeks of veg growth completed. Lil Dab moved the plants from an increasingly cramped veg area to the bloom room with the large 720W HLG LED and makes the following comment:

Moving the girls into the flower tent today, the 3ft x 3ft (1 x 1m) tent has gotten crowded and I have just enough room to move them into here. Started to do some training to open them up but quickly realized I didn’t have the room for that, so I removed training wire and did some defoliation.

Now I’m going to let them do their thing for the first two weeks. By then the other girls in the tent will be finished and I’ll scrog them out.

SLIC Day 44 (last day of veg/start of flowering). Above, Slush Mint Cake thriving in the coco fibre with abundant foliage & growth.

Slush Mint Cake beautiful display in flowering with numerous heavy blooms

With the cannabis bloom phase underway Slush Mint Cake started to stretch and feed heavily. The final buds are very compact and closely resemble an indica. But there is sufficient sativa influence to allow some stretch in early bloom.

Later on, the branches will often need support in to prevent them collapsing under their own weight. Aroma tends to be sweet and sour, gassy & fruity with overlying notes of candy and smooth ice-cream.

As a fan of dabs and cannabis concentrates, Lil Dab loved the abundant sticky resin that allowed him to reach an impressive 20% yield on his rosin production (i.e. 100g of buds produced 20g of rosin).

Below are some pictures and comments from Lil Dab as Slush Mint Cake thrived in the excellent conditions provided in bloom, eventually producing a heavy 220g / 7.8oz harvest.

Day 52-8 (day 8 of flowering) SLIC (Slush Mint Cake) wants to be a big girl – Can’t keep up with her feeding.

Day 14 of flower. I thought about scrogging them but didn’t want to deal with the net so I just did a heavy duty training session on them. Supercropped some branches and got the canopy opened up for the last bit of stretch.

SLIC (Slush Mint Cake) at day 58 & day 14 of flower. She got similar structure, little more stretchy but branches aren’t as heavy. She might need some staking once the buds get big.

Antonio was following the pre-release grow online and was also impressed with the growth and the first couple of weeks of bloom. He made the following remarks on the grow forum in response to Lil Dab noticing a certain degree of stretch during early bloom:

Regarding the SLIC, yes she needs support during middle/late flowering. She is bit leggy/stretchy, you will read all about it once she is being launched next month on the website.

Lil Dab replies along with more pictures:

Thank you thats good to know about SLIC (Slush Mint Cake). I was thinking it was something I was doing. I feel like she just wants lots of light and feed. The more I give her, the happier she is.

Day 26 of flower. The girls are looking good. I should have done training earlier – they didn’t keep stretching like I hoped, but it’s fine. I haven’t been doing anything to them since. I’m going to get in here this weekend and start taking some leaves off.

Day 33 of flower, frost is coming and smells are coming on. But it’s hard to get a distinct smell with everything else in the tent. They are looking awesome super frosty and there is a plethora of aromas in the tent hard to pick them apart. Really excited to see how these press out (rosin production).

SLIC (Slush Mint Cake), her smells aren’t super strong – hard to pin. I think I smell berries and liquorice maybe some floral aromas not as loud as the others, but her buds are a lot stickier.

She’s a chunky one nice open structure with big frosty buds can’t figure out her smell either. I think I smell oranges from a far, but then when I get in it smells earthy and musky. Don’t think it will be long for her she’s finishing up pretty quick it appears.

SLIC flowering day 49.

As Slush Mint Cake entered late bloom, she developed her beautiful reddish/pinky purple hues. The buds start to swell rapidly and she is often ready after 8-9 weeks of flowering. Lil Dab was impressed with the eye-catching blooms:

Yeah SLIC (Slush Mint Cake) has bunch of pink and purple hues, very pretty to look at. Her buds are huge super chunky golf balls. I was thinking the same thing. I thought she was going to take a while (to finish) the way she was growing. But the last half of flower is flying by, shell be ready soon.

Slush Mint Cake, XL harvest and generous rosin yields

After 62 days / 9 weeks the Slush Mint Cake had grown into a chunky, sticky plant with plenty of generously proportioned blooms. Some more comments and pictures from Lil Dab:

SLIC (Slush Mint Cake) got the axe tonight, buds are super chunky and super frosty. I thought I was getting a floral smell but think it’s more earthy (day 62 of flowering).

Trimming her up tonight. The buds are frosty, fat, dense sticky – everything. She’s getting pretty strong smelling. At one point I thought it was a skunky smell but I think it’s more of a funky/earthy/floral smell. Very hard to describe. Thanks brother yeah SLIC (Slush Mint Cake) was easy to trim besides it being so sticky.

220g/7.8oz harvest. 100g of bud produced 20g of rosin via the rosin press

Lil Dab has a rosin press. These devices come in different sizes/prices, but essentially, they ‘squeeze’ the oil out the the buds under high pressure (and sometimes at a slightly elevated temperature for maximum extraction). The extract is usually known as ‘rosin’ and is popular with me growers since rosin is so easy to make, without the need for solvents or flammable gas such as butane. Here are some more comments and pictures from Lil Dab:

I weighed up SLIC (Slush Mint Cake) tonight & got around 220 grams. A very nice harvest for the size of her. The buds are really heavy. Super sticky, I kept having to change gloves while packing bags to press it.

Got a very nice return – 20% from 100 grams. Super light colour rosin. Not sure how to describe the smells and flavours from her, sort of sweet but floral. Not really strong or loud, but definitely tasty.

I don’t smoke any flower. I usually consume most of my cannabis by dabs. I did smoke some SLIC (can I mention her name yet?) with a buddy the other night that came over and didn’t want to do dabs. It was great. Smoked a big joint of it – very smooth and was super stoned once we finished it.

Rating overall : 9 out of 10 strain!

Great. One of my favourites that I’ve grown. Nine stars – the only reason I didn’t give her a ten was because her structure was a little bit lanky and needed support in late flower.

Aroma: 4/5

The only thing I think she could be better in was aroma. It wasn’t super strong but everything else is top notch. The buds were huge, dense and frosty. I just thought terps could have been stronger, good smell just not strong.

Taste: 5/5

Effect: 5/5

Bag appeal: 5/5

All tiptop.

Last words from Lil Dabs:

Slush Mint Cake grew pretty easy but was a little finicky. Something seemed off the whole grow, but she grew fairly well. Buds were dense and big but with a more open structure than Ice Cream Haze meaning even less mould worry with her. Her aroma was more floral/earthy. I think I enjoyed the high better from Slush Mint Cake – it seemed a bit of a heavier high.

Final thoughts from the Dutch Passion team

The Dutch Passion team were impressed with the result from Lil Dabs, especially since he felt that the plant perhaps never completely reached her maximum potential. The trichome density was great to see and this helped Lil Dabs reach such high (20%) extraction yields from the buds. And with so many heavy blooms the yield looked XL in size… and premium in quality.

As always with experienced coco growers, coco fibre combined with well-controlled hydroponics & powerful LED supports rapid growth and heavy blooms. Congrats to the grower!
